This was a documentary that, from the get go, felt like a feature film. Although it was gorgeously shot, (each one feeling well thought out) I couldn’t put on the shoes of the subjects in the documentary, as I can in a shakily filmed Theroux piece. The glistening, smooth and perfect feel of this film, make it impossible for me to empathise with it’s subjects, I instead feel like I’m watching them, watching actors.
The documentary is intensely boring, oddly therapeutic, which I’m sure is not it’s intended purpose. Context is a very important thing in documentaries, this film provided none, which made it even more difficult to process what was going on, instead I viewed the documentary is pure eye candy, due to the beautiful shots.
As a documentary in my view, it fails. It doesn’t provide any of the key details a documentary should provide such as context.
However as an independent piece of film, it is strikingly beautiful and serves as an excellent watch.
